I went to the Listening Tour today - and it was awesome, but I don't have time to tell you all now, so that will be later. I also didn't: - email the awards presenters, though I've started the email - finalise the FAQ and send it to fred_mouse but that's on my to do list too! - make sure my NAFF con report is done and dusted and ready for printing... mostly i'm just trusting buoy_wonder because he's awesome. - do much work work at all I did have a discussion with Manager G on CUA agreements, and they make sense, I will be applying them like a mighty gatekeeper!! We're also going to tackle the organisation and record keeping of the invoices. My boss Director R is very happy with me, is convinced I'm the right person for the job, despite me not quite having my head aorund it all yet, or being caught up on all the bits yet. He's really happy for me to bounce things off him, discuss stuff I'm thinking of in terms of improvements and stuff, also he's pleased that he and the department got warm fuzzies because I asked him for permission to go to the Listening Tour. More on that later. Now, to meet alkland and the_informative!!! OMG so busy right now!!!!!!!!!! But just so excited and happy - Swancon is almost HERE!!! I can't wait!!!! I get to see you all, and hug you and be impressed by you, inspired by you and catch up on Stuff!! Play games, discuss stuff and and and and MORE!!! *bounce bounce bounce bounce bounce bounce bounce* Also just to reiterate? I really don't care that the Tin Duck nomination list is long, it's a worthwhile list and people who nominated thought that we in WA should be reminded about those things that were awesome in the past year - if there is stuff missing and you didn't nominate, then do so next year, if there's stuff missing and you did nominate then hopefully it will be helpful for next time. The Tin Ducks at their core are recognition, appreciation and valuing the talent and time and contribution and stuff that we in WA are doing - we are in my opinion so vibrant and lively and involved and dedicated because in part we're always noticing and recognising and supporting one another in doing so (for the most part). I think the Tin Ducks embody that in everything from their pro awards to my favourite, the Mumfan. We are so lucky to be supported in this way and ot have this - we should be proud of it and stop disbaraging the fact that I didn't make the list shorter because I didn't want to arbitrarily dismiss the works that you've all been doing. That isn't to say that next time I won't make some kind of statement leading up to running the thing that things will be shortlisted and on what basis - but jsut doing so with no explanation and warning? Not my style, it's meant to be inclusive and not exclusive. Which is to say: stop bitching about it, because you don't have to count the votes and organise the thing, until you're doing that kind of thing, your complaints are not at all helpful or useful. (why yes, I'm done on this issue. Just done.) I have had a very very busy and productive day: - sent out reminders for NAFF voting (vote!) - sent emails to people re NAFF with bank details, cheque details and answering other questions - did spreadsheet for the votes on the NAff candidates so its easy to track the amount of votes and for who etc. - started tin duck spreadsheet - started work on ditmar voting form - didn't kill woman i'm working with for overcomplicating explanations and processes again. black_samvara i look forward to our diagramming on Friday! - went to iProc training, fell in love with it. - was useful to black_samvara in carting groceries home for her in my spare hour before we headed off to the city for a hotel walk through. - hotel walk through went well, am positive. - walked to train station, the long way via discussion with R, was horrified by replacement bus for train, and whimpered at the thought of standing all the way to Kenwick. - by this point I'd been wandering about all day in fairly comfortable shoes, but not so comfortable many hours after the fact, and I think I've quite solidly bruised them. I was in enough pain that the getting home thing just filled me with wibbleness. - the 2 replacement stops for maddington and kenwick are at the extreme ends of each station furtherest away from my house as possible. Getting off bus in Maddington (I'd hoped it was the closer of the 2), I nearly sat down where I was and bawled. - bus on its way into the city came along, caught that and very very very very wonderful bus driver kindly did me a good turn and let me off at the stop near my house. Am very grateful to her, and to the universe for providing for me, as that one more thing today would have been just a bit too much. - reviewed the program items list that strangedave posted with his 'nifty' form that i filled out a bajillion times. He may hate me now. - avoided watching and listening to the hillbilly horror film that K's laughing at where there are bits of body everywhere amongst other things. He stopped trying to tell me about it when I pointed out that he'd have to take care of me tonight if I had nightmares. Yes I am that susceptible to some things. * First day was good - initiative is a good thing :) People are nice, the work is a little more purchasing than I expected - this will be the biggest learning curve. * Handover = much awesome. * e_dan there is no chance of me becoming enamoured of this job - it's just not that kind of job, and I don't think it's something I can forget, but it will do what I want it to do (namely pay bills, allow me to tick other boxes). * NAFF con report has been dragged, kicking and screaming into something resembling not ridiculously bad. agoodliedown is amazing and I love her dearly for her dedication and sacrifice to edit it for me. I am now more convinced than ever that I lack some key elements that are important for being a writer - I'm happy to let other people do it and appreciate them. * NAFF - VOTING IS NOW OPEN! VOTE ALL OF YOU! www.swancon.com/naff (now updated) * Got the phone call I was waiting on from someone, much better than in wildest hopes for the outcome. * Windy night = hopeful sleep! * OMG Ditmars. I woke up reaosnably early today after much much needed sleep. I crashed hard Saturday night, after a very full day, and sleeping very badly on Friday night. I had my first driving lesson with prk today, my second ever lesson, but the other was so long ago that I needed to essentially start from scratch. I really love him as a teacher for this, that I'm nervous is to be expected, but I never once felt anxious, or silly or anything like that. No damage to car or any surrounds, no actual mishaps (stalling doesn't count!). I got better the hang of starting, stopping, turning - even a tight one was okay, on slow after a while! Also the changing into first, and into second gear and back and forth. I began to get a little more comfortable with it, though I feel despaired of ever getting competent at this at times. At others I'm extremely confident of ultimate competent-ness. We shall see. I'm very grateful to him, and am very pleased with what I achieved today. Including that I'm willing to do it again, and that he is. Swancon meeting, went really well, and once again I love my committee. They are the awesomeness! I am now sighing resolutely and intent on getting on with my Ditmar spreadsheet (of DoooOOooOoooOoooOom). Also, NAFF voting is now open - we have three awesome candidates and you should vote to bring them to Swancon - all votes cost $5 and this goes directly into fundraising to make this happen. I saw '27 Dresses' tonight - which was most definitely a romantic comedy. But like 'Music and Lyrics' from last year, it was similarly well written and lovely. The dialogue was great, punchy and both heartwarming and funny. I really enjoyed it. amarillion and I had a blue moon moment of similar appreciation for the hotness that is James Marsden in this movie :P (we go for opposite things in our celebrity men :P) We also saw trailers for 'St Trinian's which seems to be a cross between the ultimate schoolgirl fantasy and something along the lines of 'Malory Towers'. I can't wait - so so trashy, and yet, I am compelled :) Other really interesting trailer was for 'Hey, Hey it's Esther Blueberger' which suffers from an unfortunate name, but is an Aussie/NZ production, and looks to be an awesome story - and also features Toni Collett whom I love in movies. 2007 was a year in the cinema where I wanted lots of moments of my life back from previews that were forced upon me - this year, looks to be the opposite *here's hoping* in any case. As far as all the stuff that I have to get done? My long to-do lists? Well I took a day off today - I don't think I'll even do any work after typing this... I figured that last night was evidence that I needed a break from it all. I've been working on something solidly for ages, and usually several simultaneous somethings. Today I slothed in the house, including spending time with my beloved as he was also home. I wandered around Carousel in the aircon for a while this afternoon before the movie which was also pleasant - I don't know why, but when I'm out meandering in the shopping centre on my own, I feel quite alone, in that pleasant way. Weird, given I'm surrounded by peopele. Bought 2 books, including the most recent Scott Westerfeld book "Extra's" which I can't wait to read, and also the 4th Naomi Novik book *hugs books*, the books and the shoes I bought yesterday are my initial rewards for job stuff well done. The shoes were also necessary - and new ones of the black sketchers that I've been wearing to death steadily since mid last year when I got them in Melbourne. Best shoes ever. NAFF voting will hopefully kick off tomorrow or Thursday, as will the announcement of when I'm holding my NAFF fundraising bbq (early March at this point), so stay tuned. * I'm still waiting to hear on the Events Coordinator job. Also this week the Prem&Cab job should be shortlisting. I have applied for lots more jobs and growled at seek.com.au lots because I'm frustrated in general with the process. * NAFF nominations are finally out! Yay! I still have a bbq fundraiser to organise for this - I'm thinking second weekend in Feb at this stage. More details to come. * I went swimming with wolflullaby last night - it was fun! I'd forgotten how tiring it is... and how much fun, especially with company. We went to Riverton Leisureplex and plan to go regularly, if interested let me know. * I have started work on my study. There is a lot to do. * I want to go to cyps Enjoy party at the end of the month, but getting home will be problematic, anyone interested in going that wouldn't mind me getting a lift home with them? * The main problem with still being jobless in January is all the things I'd anticipated already being in the midst of right now: - going back to the gym, being able to have the personal training again that will push the anxiety away. I was doing really well on my own, just going to classes, until doing that and the job from hell became too much. I've been back a couple of times since to be familiar, to just 'play' a little, but nothing that actually has involved much in the way of fitness work. - have started formal driving lessons so that I feel more comfortable taking friends up on offers to spend time teaching/familiarising me. - considering and implementation of various house stuff. There is a much more comprehensive list on this in my head, but most of it depends on the building company being decent and fixing my house without angst. Notice my willingness to give benefit of the doubt to them. * The Swancon FAQ is making my brain hurt. Most of the document is fine and good. The genres section is troubling. It IS one of the more confusing aspects of being new in the con environment, so I think it is important to have... but the inherent problems is the viewpoint of the definition, it's accuracy based on a whole lot of other stuff. I don't want to drop the section entirely, it feels like I'd be leaving an elephant in the room and telling people not to look. I also want it to be accurate. If you have ideas or suggestions on how to achieve this, I'd love to hear them. There's some interesting discussion going on over at the entry here if you're interested: http://mynxii.livejournal.com/485644.htmlFeeling... sad Compelled listening... nil |

* Still job hunting, some prospects including job for prem and cab, hopefully will get confirmation that my application has been received any day now. Or you know, an interview request. * Interviewed for an ongoing temp job this afternoon at DPI, really liked the guy I interviewed for, and the girl whose job I'd be taking over was lovely too :) She's leaving to pursue a singing career - so no bad blood here :) * Am dying of summer. *hands all the extra summer that is unappreciated by me, to dr_k. I'm up to something like my 6th cold shower tonight... i doubt it will be the final one either. It's hot enough that I offered to sleep in the spare bed so K could get some sleep... * Have spent wonderful time with prk and agoodliedown recently to do with hotel and budget wrangling... now if only the effort counted we'd have it made baby. Hotel meeting tomorrow, I hope that it will go well. Damn Perth and it's lack of growing hotel industry *shakes fist* * Have also spent wonderful time recruiting people to do specific roles for Swancon 2009 - am enjoying this a lot, especially as I am finding a number of people who have not had the opportunity to work with a committee before, I'm enjoying meeting some new people thanks to this. * Again with the wonderful - much there of, coffee time with girliejones and editormum, the latter of whom is feeding my book reading by lending me 'A touch of frost' which is my favourite of the Merry books so far, and 'Kushiel's Justice' which I've been pining over. Also, in my spate of rereading Anita, realised that I don't think I have books 9, 10 or 11... or the beginning Merry books. * wolflullaby is coming over tomorrow afternoon to keep me company and type for me while I try and sort out my study, including the dust and clutter - wish me luck, I may not come out alive. * I think I may have found somewhere to buy my powersupply for my pc from - fingers crossed. I'll go in and see them on Wednesday if I can manage it, then I just need to get my pc thingy back together again. * I'm looking forward to having a new job so that I can buy a laptop to replace my desktop system. * Nominations for Ditmars will be out as soon as I can get the feedback/go ahead I need to send out the form. Tin Ducks won't be far behind. NAFF nominations for all you non WA people out there is waiting in the wings. * I cooked dinner tonight for the first time in forever... with daylight savings and the heat it seems that K and I prefer to snack rather than eat a solid meal... now if I can just get that to be more healthy with the snacking I'll be doing well. The way things are going tonight I'll not be sleeping much, will have finished 'Incubus Dreams' and will be cursing the heat something fierce tomorrow on my way into my 'early' meeting. It's half nine, so it's not actually early, but given my prospects for sleep, it feels like it is. Feeling... stupidly hot Compelled listening... nil |

* Met with prk and agoodliedown to evaluate possible hotel space, feeling pretty good about it, shall see what happens. * Had lunch with those mentioned above, and discussed lots of stuff to do with Swancon 2009 that occurred to us over food. (as it does) * Went to Myer, stumbled on 'utensils canister' for stupidly cheap (under $9), also bought 2 Miss Shop soft and comfy t's for the year (they're $10 atm, 50% off) * Met up with strangedave and got a crash course into 'How to run the Ditmars', I'm a little apprehensive - I'm aware this gig has a history of causing extreme stress, hopefully though, I can make it work and do a good job. I'm looking forward to trying. So yes, I'm the Ditmar Administrator for 2008. * Also did some thinking and paper planning for the Tin Ducks 2008, decidedly easier and more familiar :) This included thinking on a possible theme for the ceremony (comments with suggestions welcome), and having a vague idea as to what needs to happen in the ceremony, bare bones level. * Did some thinking and planning for NAFF nomination and fundraising. * Went to Swancon 2009 meeting, lots of productive discussion. I have a long to do list - but much of it on the same vein, so shouldn't be too overwhelming. Much of it is familiar stuff that I know I can do/organise/achieve. Things look to be decidedly busy between now and Swancon for me - I may have summarised it quite tightly above, but there's a lot of work involved, and a lot of relying on people to respond with info and nominate and vote and stuff. So start thinking of things that should be nominated for the Tin Ducks and the Ditmars, or if you're not in WA, think about whether you'd make a good delegate for NAFF to Swancon this year. I'm curious if anyone is interested in putting together a folder of the nominated works for the Tin Ducks once we have the list of nominations? This is to have at the convention and remind people of what is up for an award, or to draw their attention to it in the first place. Also, does anyone have a list of the swancon art show submissions for 2007? I'd love to email this out to job people's memories, or, if you submitted pieces, feel free to comment about it below and I'll compile a list from it and send it out to the list. Alas Belmont (and I suspect any other cinema) won't book unless it's a big group for Boxing Day - understandable as it is their biggest day of the year :) Still, I'm still interested in going to see 'The Golden Compass' and 'Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium' on Boxing day afternoon, and am happy to go along as a group with people. The downside of this is, that I can't do a central organising of tickets to make things easier - it'd have to be individual (which makes me twitchy!). Must get organised, I still have 2 events I want to do for NAFF, one of which is a dinner, and the other is just a general picnicy type gathering - likely to be in Hyde Park. Details on these forthcoming. Also, I'm going to start promoting NAFF to those interested in nominating - if you're interested you should email me: transcendancing@gmail.com and I'll let you know what the process will be. * I have an interview with AIM tomorrow - which I found out is in Floriat, and not Subiaco... but even so, I still get to go past and get Dave's coffee in the morning on my way, so I can deal with it, besides its not like going to Joondalup every day the way I used to *shudder* Wish me luck :) What also came out of my interview yesterday (aside from the fact that it went really well), was that I needed to really dress up for the interview - upon the advice of the consultant who places people for this company frequently. So I went off yesterday to try and find a cheap suit - and managed to find one!!! *relief* $60 unexpectedly spent, but now all I have to do is find an appropriate top to wear under the jacket - I'm very hopeful though. Also, I love Katies and Autograph * A very happy birthday from Aussieland to kevin3 :) * I have to find someone willing to play with a scanner for me to scan some stuff in for my Naff con report - does anyone have access and can help me out? * Speaking of Naff, I have a couple of things coming up including a December movie screening, and a possible fundraiser bbq in Kings or Hyde park - I'm still working on the details, but the bbq idea I've picked up from alkland so all props and thanks to her :) Feeling... accomplished Compelled listening... Flying away soon! I will have limited or no access to email or lj during that time, so if anything interesting happens, let me know :) I, will be living it up and partying with the Melbourne fans for the Natcon! I can't wait! Also, I will see a friend I haven't seen since I lived in Darwin - it will be incredible :) My flight leaves at stupid o'clock (12.50am) and I have lots of music cd's to keep me company during the flight! Courtesy of my lovely IT staff, who spent the afternoon doing weird network stuff in order to copy my music for me (i have admin rights to my pc, but it has no burner - damn!) K's D is driving me to the airport tonight and I am struck by the lovelyness of it all - I like him a lot, and he's great company :) Also, he likes both Roxette and Savage Garden AND Darren Hayes - loudly! *yay* Besides, with K being soppy over him, I get more soppy cuddles and kisses and other moments too - it's lovely :) I'm keeping him :) Had an interview today for an events coordinator position - marathon interview, most of mine seem to be due to the unique nature of my experience and skill. The role however is part time, and I'm really wanting full time. That said, if it's over 30 hours, I'm interested - not holding my breath though. Almost finished packing - I may yet have to make one of the small suitcases the big one, but I might get away with the 2 small ones yet (I'm hoping to anyway). I won't come close to hitting the luggage limit but there are some bulky items that I'm packing that are making things a little interesting. Wish me luck! Yay! Holidays! So, me going to Melbourne will effecitively put the fund at zero. So, that means I get to do lots of fundraising - which I'm looking forward to. I have some ideas. Basically, I need to raise at least $700 between now and Swancon next year. First of all: - Auction for the Melbourne Natcon, i have a couple of Elizabeth Moon books that I can put in there. - Any one else have anything they'd be willing to donate to Naff for auction? Second of all: After the con, I'm going to do a series of 2 or 3 fundraising dinners, probably 2 spaced out this year, and 1 early next year. What I wanted to do is, put together all the information required, and get the different fan groups in the other states to also run a couple of fundraising dinners. Since there is a built in donation, there is usually a guaranteed minimum amount of funds raised you get at the end of it. Additionally if you have a tin, then often you get additional donations. So, just thinking it out a bit more. A dinner, you can safely assume 10 - 15 people (lets work with 10). Built into the cost of the dinner is a $10 donation. The whole price for the event is usually between $40 and $50 depending on what kind of deal you can get from the restaurant. 10 people each with a $10 donation - $100 If, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane also do one, that's another $400 (conservatively). If each of us does 2 dinners, then we hit $1000 without too much trouble. Which means, that someone coming over to Perth next year for the Natcon, will have their costs covered, with some left over. This will be further added to by the Swancon auction, and any events I do thereafter (with the assistance of whoever wins NAFF for next year). So basically, that's my plan of action. Anyone from one of the other Aussie states want to do a fundraising dinner if I give you all the information in the world to make it easy? And be willing to hand hold as necessary? Yay!!! I won the NAFF Vote!! (see aust_sf_fan_fun for more details) This is my happy point. I'm at work, reworking my application (with much love to mr_booboo for assistance). I am going to the WASO performance of 'Poem of Ecstacy' courtesy of working at Tourism. I met with Gel Group today, hopefully they can sell me to a company for $55k pa. When are Natcon attendees flying out from Perth? Maybe I can get similar flights :) Feeling... bored Compelled listening... "Void" - Darren Hayes |
